Workshop Details
This is a course for astrologers who want to become better writers, who want community support for their writing projects, who want feedback and support for their writing from the members of that community, including other astrologers who work in publishing, academia, or have proven track records publishing and presenting their own written work, lectures, and more. This is a course about the fire at night: about the ways in which story helps us to become more human through gathering, imagining, listening, and reshaping the world–together.
Over the course of eight weeks, Cameron Steele, a writer with a doctorate in literature and a divinatory background in Hellenistic astrology and esoteric tarot, and Vivi Henriette, astrologer, tarot reader and founder of Art of the Zodiac, will guide students through the work and charts of brilliant past and present storytellers, including Audre Lorde, Alicia Kennedy, Raechel Anne Jolie, and Simone Weil, among others. Each week will feature a different elemental “logic” at work in the essays of the artists discussed–as well as opportunities to apply that logic to one’s own astrological or divinatory writing goals. This class, at its base, is really for anyone who wants to enhance their writing, life, and astrological or magical practice through story, magic, and community.
Students will write and read together during each two-hour class, with opportunities to workshop writing projects, join guest lectures on various aspects of writing about astrology from Rick Levine and others, and connect with Rae Sapp, publisher of the Mountain Astrologer. At the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to submit their polished pieces to The Mountain Astrologer, with the chance of publication with our course sponsor. Community-building is an important element of the class, with opportunities for students to connect with each other and course instructors outside of class sessions on our course Discord server. Astrologers can expect to come away with an enhanced ability to tell stories beyond rote chart delineation, a better understanding of the world of astrological publishing, the kind of writing instruction usually reserved for within the ivory tower of traditional academia, and lasting membership in a budding writing and reading community for astrologer, diviners, and the magically minded. Expect to come away with a renewed sense of awe at the uncanny, impossible-yet-possible patterns that bind us to ourselves, each other, and the star-lit world around us.
